The Counter Clock Walk

Practise small, supported turns by walking a slow square around a kitchen counter or island.

Starting Position

Stand at one corner of a sturdy kitchen counter or island, with one hand resting lightly on its edge. Set your feet hip-width apart and your knees soft.

Step-by-Step Movement Instructions

  1. 1Face along the counter with one hand resting lightly on its edge and your feet hip-width apart.
  2. 2Take one slow, short step forward along the counter, keeping your hand within reach of its edge.
  3. 3At the corner, stop with both feet flat on the floor and turn your body a quarter turn using several tiny steps, keeping a hand on the counter.
  4. 4Walk slowly along the next side of the counter, one short step at a time.
  5. 5Repeat the stop-and-turn at each corner until you return to where you started.
  6. 6Rest with both feet flat on the floor, then walk the square in the other direction if you feel steady.

Practice Duration

One slow square in each direction, about three to five minutes, once a day.

Breathing Cue

Breathe naturally. Exhale gently as you turn each corner, and never hold your breath.

Supported & Seated Variation (Path A)

For the seated Path A version, sit in a sturdy chair beside the counter and practise the turning pattern in place: turn your head and shoulders slowly toward each corner in turn, then shift your weight gently from side to side. Keep a hand on the counter throughout.

What to Notice During Practice

Your steps stay short and even, and every turn happens with both feet on the floor in small steps, never by pivoting on one foot.

When to Stop Immediately:

Dizziness, pain in the knees, hips, or ankles, unsteadiness even with a hand on the counter, or breathlessness that does not ease when you rest.

Sit down safely if you feel light-headed or unsteady. There is never any reason to push through pain or discomfort.

“A three-to-five-minute, counter-supported square walk, done standing with a hand on the counter, that practises gentle turns for anyone who wants steadier direction changes at home. If a corner feels awkward, skip it and simply walk back along the side you came from.”
