The Seated Torso Turn
Gently mobilize the upper back and waist while practicing a calm, breath-led turn.
Starting Position
Sit tall in a sturdy chair with both feet flat on the floor, knees about hip-width apart. Rest your hands lightly on your thighs and let your shoulders drop away from your ears.
Step-by-Step Movement Instructions
- 1Breathe in slowly through your nose and feel your spine grow a little taller without arching your back.
- 2Breathe out gently and turn your chest, shoulders, and head a small, comfortable amount to the right.
- 3Pause for one easy breath in the turned position, keeping both sitting bones on the chair.
- 4Breathe in and slowly turn back to face forward.
- 5Breathe out and turn a small, comfortable amount to the left, pausing again for one easy breath.
- 6Breathe in and return to the center, then rest for a breath before repeating once more on each side.
Practice Duration
Two slow turns to each side, once a day, ideally before a short walk or at the start of a practice session.
Breathing Cue
Inhale to grow tall and to return to center; exhale gently as you turn. Never hold your breath or force the turn.
Supported & Seated Variation (Path A)
For the most supported Path A version, sit in a chair with a firm back and keep your back lightly touching it. Turn only as far as your hands can comfortably reach across your thighs, and rest a hand on the chair arm or a nearby table if that feels steadier. If turning to one side feels tighter, simply turn less far on that side.
What to Notice During Practice
Your hips stay still and level on the chair, your shoulders stay relaxed, and the turn feels easy — like looking over your shoulder to greet someone, not like twisting hard.
Back, neck, or shoulder pain, dizziness, numbness or tingling, shortness of breath that does not settle when you stop, or any feeling that you might lose your balance.
Sit down safely if you feel light-headed or unsteady. There is never any reason to push through pain or discomfort.
