The Brush Knee Step

Try a brushing hand movement with a familiar forward step.

Starting Position

Stand comfortably with a clear path. Learn the footwork first. Arms relaxed.

Step-by-Step Movement Instructions

  1. 1Shift weight right and place the left heel forward.
  2. 2As you settle onto the left foot, sweep the left hand past the outside of the left knee. Bring the right palm forward below shoulder height.
  3. 3Pause with the elbow soft. Keep the knee following the foot rather than twisting it.
  4. 4Step with the right foot and reverse the hands. Continue slowly.

Practice Duration

Four to six steps, then rest. Repeat only if the coordination feels manageable.

Breathing Cue

Natural breathing. Do not delay a breath to match the hands.

Supported & Seated Variation (Path A)

Keep one hand on a counter and leave out the hand pattern. Seated: practice the arm movement alone.

What to Notice During Practice

Brush with the hand on the same side as the stepping foot.

When to Stop Immediately:

Shoulder or knee pain, dizziness, or loss of balance.

Sit down safely if you feel light-headed or unsteady. There is never any reason to push through pain or discomfort.

“This borrows a simplified Brush Knee pattern. You don't need to reproduce a full classical form.”
