Small Step Turns: Avoiding a Rushed Pivot

By Sophia Lin·September 12, 2026·4 min read

Most balance loss during indoor walking happens during turns. When people reach the end of a room, they tend to pivot on the ball of their foot or spin their torso while their feet are still planted, twisting the knee.

In Tai Chi JingFlow, we never pivot abruptly. When you reach the end of your walkway, you pause with both feet flat on the floor.

In Exercise 20, The Mindful Step Turn, you take three to four tiny, lifted steps to change direction. You lift the toes slightly, angle the foot outward 45 degrees, place it down empty, shift your weight, and bring the other foot around.

This keeps your hips, knees, and ankles aligned in the same plane at all times, completely eliminating joint torque.

Key Takeaways for Practice

  • Never pivot abruptly on a planted foot or twist your knees.
  • Pause completely before beginning any change of direction.
  • Take 3 to 4 small, lifted steps to make a 180-degree turn.
  • Keep one hand resting on a counter or wall throughout the turn.
