Preparing a Clear Indoor Practice Space

By Sophia Lin·September 20, 2026·4 min read

Before taking your first Tai Chi step, look down at the floor. In home exercise, the physical environment is your most important safety partner.

Throw rugs are responsible for a significant proportion of in-home falls among older adults. Roll up any loose mats along your walking path or ensure they have non-skid rubber backings.

Footwear matters: barefoot walking on cold tile can strain foot arches, while loose slippers can slide off mid-step. A supportive, flat-soled walking shoe or well-fitted non-skid socks provide the best stability.

Ensure adequate lighting so you can clearly see the entire walking route, and keep a sturdy kitchen counter or heavy dining table within arm's reach at all times.

Key Takeaways for Practice

  • Remove or secure all loose throw rugs and electrical cords.
  • Wear flat-soled, supportive shoes or non-slip footwear.
  • Practice in a well-lit space where you can clearly see your footing.
  • Choose fixed support that will not slide or tip if you reach for it.
