The Wall-Supported Side Step
Step sideways along a wall with a hand on it at all times.
Starting Position
Stand with your right shoulder toward a clear stretch of wall. Place your right hand flat on the wall at shoulder height. Feet hip-width apart, knees soft.
Step-by-Step Movement Instructions
- 1Shift enough weight onto the right foot to make the left foot light.
- 2Lift the left foot and set it down one short step to the left, about one shoe-length.
- 3Move your weight onto the left foot, letting your right hand slide along the wall.
- 4Bring the right foot toward the left until the feet are hip-width apart again.
- 5Take up to four steps to the left, then turn to face the other way and return.
- 6Keep your hand on the wall for the whole sequence, start to finish.
Practice Duration
Up to four steps each direction, once or twice.
Breathing Cue
Breathe naturally. Keep the steps slower than your usual walk.
Supported & Seated Variation (Path A)
This exercise is the supported version: keep your full hand flat on the wall throughout. If stepping feels uncertain, stay in place and simply shift your weight side to side — the wall is there for exactly that.
What to Notice During Practice
Your knees stay soft and point forward; the steps stay small and even.
Hip, knee, or ankle pain, dizziness, or unsteadiness even with your hand on the wall.
Sit down safely if you feel light-headed or unsteady. There is never any reason to push through pain or discomfort.
